I was so excited the other night at the museum when John Jensen handed me an envelope and said “This is the best I can do for you so far”……and inside, were old photos of my studio building that sits at the corner of 6th and Frederick streets in Clay Center.

We think, according to the Clay County Courthouse records, anyway, that the building was built in 1930. It was a grocery store for many years. On the back of this photo, John has written that the building with the high spire is the old hospital. John does not know what year this photo was taken.

The year is unknown on this one, too, but the name of the store is still the same “A. Fox Grocer”….and notice that on the side of the building, it reads “Last Chance”……I can’t figure out what that was about. The building is shown here with an open porch, instead of the enclosed front like in the first photo.

John took this photo in May, 1973. I was 3 years old, and living one block away. Here, the building has changed again…with the 2 large windows in the front, and the sign has changed to “6th Street Grocery”, which is how most people remember it. Now, the building has only 1 window in the front, but otherwise looks much the same.
Thanks so much for John Jensen for the photos!
